Review of "Brawl (Fight)" (Single) by THUDD
On the heels of their debut radio rock styled single, “What Once Was”, the young rockers, THUDD, out of Brighton, UK, are debuting their blazing 2nd single, “Brawl (Fight)” today, June 19th, 2020, off their upcoming July 2020 EP campaign right here on Dear Untitled!
Pressing onward with their iteration of “anthem rock”, the latest track, “Brawl (Fight)”, undoubtedly stands apart from the debut single, “What Once Was”, and hurls the catchy vibe of a sporting soundtrack into your ear canals. At first glance, the lyrics appear as though you’re re-witnessing the story of Rocky Balboa picking himself up from the ropes to fight another day. The added chants of “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT” inject the “underdog spirit” amongst the careening vocals - who doesn’t enjoy a good Cinderella story?
On a deeper listen, beyond the addictive rhythmic aggression of guitar, the lyrics unveil another layer of the trademark honesty and emotion which THUDD unashamedly professes in their art - this time breaching the topic of mental health.
Vocalist Jack Brown gives further insight:
“In terms of how we want “Brawl” to be received, I want people to enjoy the song obviously…but if you listen to the lyrics, it is about some harder topics to digest. Its not an easy song to listen to if you’re just gonna listen to the lyrics. Its a song about mental health….there were a lot of times (when starting Uni) where it felt like I couldn’t really do it - I just wanted to leave everyday - I just wanted to go back home. With those feelings, there are a lot of things I find, and something you have to come to terms with is that there are a lot of problems in life and “giving up” isn’t always the best option. With a lot of things, you just want to try and fight through it - you want to keep going…There is always a light at the end of that tunnel and you just gotta keep going. Its not worth stopping, and its not worth getting beaten.” - Jack Brown (Vocalist)
