Review of "Candle In The Dark" (Single) by Casey Sabol
“Who ever told you that you need to ask permission to be free?”
- Excerpt from “Candle In the Dark”
Initially channeling an 80’s heavy metal sound, Casey Sabol’s solo debut single, “Candle In the Dark” (May 26th, 2020), revives a potent social vigor and call to arms - seeking only to ignite a conversation among the masses. Hooking listeners with radical beats and catchy riffs, “Candle In the Dark” lends itself to easily become earworm material for all who take the 4 and a half minutes to consume and listen to the message that lies within.
“…I want to entice people into considering a more skeptical disposition towards some of the facets of our culture and society that have escaped scrutiny for a long time....I want people to have a conversation with me and other people on social media about the questions that I am raising with the lyrics and THAT is the entire reason that I make music. It is for the message, but it is for people to interpret the message in a way that entices people into discussing it and feeling like they learned something afterwards NOT from me, but maybe from themselves and maybe from with whomever else they interact throughout the course of that discussion….”
Exploding into and headlining mainstream industry conversation once again, one might consider this solo debut a ‘return to glory’ for Sabol, given his notable 15+ year history across various acts, genres, and projects such as VERY early Periphery, TAE, and a handful of other vocal features and explorations; however this talented musician has come full circle to the niche he considers home - Electronic Power Metal - for the moment. For Sabol, the vessel is his craft of music. He is merely the ignition, sparking a conversation bigger than himself and many times, larger than every single listener in his audience. It is up to whomever takes a moment to stop and accept his open invitation to participate the ongoing discussion about issues at hand - many of which impact us all. The most important part is that you engage, listen, and learn.
“We are
Like dying stars
Raging through the shadows
We’ve come too far
To flee the battle
So give your heart
ravishing and fragile
Like dying stars
If we’re just a spark
Stand
A candle in the dark”
-Excerpt from "Candle In the Dark"
Although this iteration of a guitar driven, melodic anthem of a song may not be everyone’s sonic cup of tea, metaphorically speaking, the candle has been lit - the conversation has begun. Promising a steady stream of future music, Casey Sabol has returned for the forseeable future with an axe to grind. Will you engage?
