‘Staying In’ by Out Of Service – Review by Nic Beardsley of Dear Untitled:

Approaching the latest extended stay indoors with a positive attitude, our friends in Out of Service are happy to announce their latest 3 track, ‘B-Sides’ EP, full of exactly what you’ve come to know them for: the slow-burn, mid 2000’s alt rock sonic. Trailing only a handful of months since their last full length release, ‘Burden’ (Nov 2019), these tunes are flushed out iterations which didn’t quite make the cut for the 11 track album, but are conveniently are being released now for fans to enjoy while ‘Staying In’!

Queuing up the soothing vocals of front man, Mike Capuano, and minimal guitar, the South Jersey act initiate the sequence of self-contemplation along the adventure of the next 10 minutes or so with the opening piece, “Reckless Nights” -

“…Ill tear myself apart

what does it mean?

what does it matter

if I can’t get back to you?..”

-Excerpt from '“Reckless Nights

Bearing the emotional weight which was vividly depicted on ‘Burden’, Out Of Service doesn’t hesitate to snare their audience with their entangling prose. In an instant, one begins to waltz across the clouds as “Dreams” unfolds. Somber tones encapsulate the entirety of this EP. Overtones of a forlorn cry for something lost, and the strong desire to clutch memories of a sweeter day close echo across the current “COVID-19 quarantined” void the world currently reside in. ”Social Distancing” fittingly lulls listeners further into their own mind to escape the separation, however one can’t help but wander a little to far - critically dissecting the strength of close relationships/friendships -

“…I wonder if this flame

could ever truly be enough for you?…

-Excerpt from “Dreams

The Person I Need’ snaps listeners from this current daze with a more upbeat guitar - grounding us in reality. Diving into their bag of tricks, somehow Out of Service deals yet another weighted blow to our souls as we posses just a little too much time for self-reflection…

All while perpetuating their staple sound, a-la, mid-career Brand New (Think ‘Daisy’ era), Out of Service makes more out of these 10 minutes than many artists do in twice that. For being what some may label as “leftovers” of an already a spectacular 2019 full length, this EP is undoubtedly fitting for the current scene, both musically and socially. Cozy up in your personal bubble, share this EP with a friend, and cherish these songs together as Out Of Service remains a leading force within alt rock’s ever-evolving future.

Oh, and make sure you are ‘Staying In’ with us, ya filthy animals! - Nic B.
